Norman Mayes

It is with regret, that I confirm that Norman Mayes recently passed away after a short illness.  Norman was a long standing member of CLPS, possibly the longest period of membership amongst our existing members.  The exact length of membership is not possible to establish as my records state “before 1980”, but we know that Norman was an active member pre – 1957 which relates to 64 years!!

There is little information available about Normans angling interests, but it is clear that Norman had success in catching many large fish as he won the Randall Cup for best recoded chub in 1957, 1958, 1962 & 1963.  He also won the Bentley Challenge trophy awarded to the champion match angler in 1963 & 1976.

Norman was also involved in the administration of CLPS, acting as Chairman in 1969 & 1985 also taking on the role of President in the successive years of 1970 & 1986.  For the record in this period of CLPS history a Chairman was normally in office for 12 months after which he/she was elevated to the position of President.  His last official position was the role of Auditor of the Society for many years until retirement at the 2017 AGM.

On behalf of the Committee may I express my condolences to the family of Norman Mayes.
